The RSB Standard covers biomass, as well as fuels and material products from bio- based and recycled carbon, including fossil waste. This includes liquid biofuels, gaseous biofuels, recycled carbon fuels, non-bio-based renewable fuels, biomass for heat and energy, chemicals and polymers, textiles and fibres. RSB strives to support the development of sustainable bio-based and recycled products, addressing criteria such as food and water insecurity, climate change and biodiversity loss.
The Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) is an international multi-stakeholder-initiative that brings together producers, environmental and other non-governmental organisations as well as companies to promote the sustainable production and processing of biomass products.
RSB has been recommended in the Blue Angel award criteria as the only certification system for biomass. Various NGOs, such as WWF and Solidaridad, have contributed to the development of the standard.

Which lifecycle phases are covered by the standard?

Raw materials extraction and production

Cultivation of basic products in fields (e.g. cereals, vegetables) in plantations (e.g. fruits, oils) as well as products of animal agriculture (e.g. meat, milk)

Manufacturing

Some food products go through complex manufacturing processes. During production, basic products are processed, preserved and food additives are added

Transportation / distribution

The transport route from one production stage to the next as well as to the end consumer

Products use and consumption

Usage by the owner

End-of-life

Disposal of food (waste) or further energetic use (biogas)
